Race Course Information

Upon arrival to the race site, please proceed to athlete registration located near the transition area in the grass before you rack your bike in transition. Here you will sign in as well as pick up your race number for the day. Once checked in you can proceed to the transition area to rack your bike and get set up for the day. Registration will be open at 6:30am and close at 7:30am. The pre-race meeting will take place just before start time to remind everyone of a few key points to observe during the event. Race start time is aiming for 8am.

Bike Course...15km...2 Laps

The race will start with the bike portion of the event. Upon starting, biking will loop around a large area of the main Terwilligar field in order to give the pack some time to spread out before heading into the single track trails. Once in the trails follow the signed arrows and white flagging tape to complete a lap. The first lap will bring you back to the main field that you started and will direct you to continue on for lap two. The total distance biking will be 2 laps and 15km. Once both laps are completed, you will head back to the transition area to rack your bike and move on to the paddle portion of the event.
*** Teams...When the biker returns, they must fully enter the transition zone, rack the bike, then proceed to tag the runner who may station themselves at the exit to the paddle course.***
***Bike Cut-off times—In order to keep the timeline for the day moving smoothly, there will be a cutoff time of 10:15am (approx 2.25 hours) whereby all riders must have completed the course distance and be off of the bike course and in transition in order to officially continue the race.***

  • Helmets must remain on and chin strap buckled until your bike is placed back on the rack
  • Helmets are Mandatory. Headphones are NOT permitted on any part of the course—use them and risk a disqualification.
  • Riding your bike in the transition area is prohibited. Please follow mount/dismount signs in the transition area
  • Passing is done on the left. Please be courteous and give a verbal warning to the person you are passing.
  • Watch for course flagging and signs. You will also have volunteers pointing you in the right direction. The race committee will do its best to ensure you do not miss any turns, however it is your responsibility to know the course and where you should be riding.
  • Upon completion of the bike section, you will return to the transition area and dismount at the dismount line, then proceed to racking your bike.
  • Mountain bikes, Fat Tire bikes and cyclocross bikes will be permitted. All bikes must have offroad style tires and two functional brakes. NOTE: E-bikes will NOT be permitted in this event.
  • Pedal Cage style straps must have straps removed. Normal running shoes or clip in cleats are recommended
  • Any bar ends must be completely capped

Paddle Course...5km...Point to Point
The start of the paddle portion of the event will take place after the bike has been racked. Leaving the bike transition area, the racer will make their way across Terwilligar field to the boat transition area close to the river entry point. Here the racer will put on and fully zip the lifejacket, then proceed to move their water craft to the river and begin the paddle. The paddle course will travel downriver to the Quesnel bridge approximately 5km away. All paddlers must have a fully zipped lifejacket from the time the participant leaves the boat transition area up to the release point upon exiting the water. An emergency whistle attached to the life jacket to use in case of emergencies on the water is also a mandatory item. It is the athletes’ responsibility to have these items prior to the event as they will NOT be available for use or purchase on race morning.

Upon approaching the Quesnel bridge, paddlers should aim to “beach” their craft on the shoreline. Racers will then drag/carry their craft up the concrete embankment and place their gear within the boat transition area.  At this point, athletes will be able to unzip their lifejacket and remove it. Racer items will be neatly piled here and then will continue on to the final run portion of the event.

  • Life jackets are mandatory and must have an emergency whistle.
  • Life jackets must be fully zipped / buckled for the entire paddle
and may only be removed once the athlete has entered the release point in boat transition area.
  • Canoes, Kayaks and SUP’s will be allowed. If using a kayak, it may have a rudder.
  • Skirts will NOT be allowed on kayaks.
  • Only one team member will paddle this portion of the team event.
  • Athletes may paddle in bare feet or with shoes. Be prepared for shoes to get wet, so a second pair is recommended for the running portion of the event. A towel to wipe off sandy feet is a good idea as well. Be prepared to carry a few items with you during the paddle such as shoes for the run and a water bottle.
***Teams will tag in the next racer from the entry to the transition zone. Once tagged, the team member can now proceed to the run and head out onto the course.***

Need a boat for event weekend? If so, contact Totem Outfitters in Edmonton and use code Totem50 for 50% off the weekend rental.

Run Course...6km...Back to Terwilligar Park
The run will start from the boat transition area and head back to the finish following a mix of multiuse and singletrack trails. These trails will take you behind Fort Edmonton Park, across the bridge and into Oleskiw Park, then across the Terwilligar Park bridge and back to the finish area.

  • There will be a water station at the exit of the boat transition area and also again at the Terwilligar bridge about 1km from the finish area. Racers will be required to carry a water bottle for use at aid stations as no cups will be provided to reduce waste.
  • Headphones are NOT permitted on any part of the course—use them and risk a disqualification.
  • Passing is done on the left. Please be courteous and give a verbal warning to the person you are passing.
  • Watch for course flagging and signs. You will also have a few volunteers pointing you in the right direction. The race committee will do its best to ensure you do not miss any turns, however it is your responsibility to know the course and where you should be running.

*** All bike & run trails will still be open to the public during the race. Signs will be put up to indicate that there is a Race In Progress, however please use courtesy when encountering other users of the trails.***

Transition Areas
The main transition area for bikes will be located in grass area near the main parking area of Terwilligar Park. The secondary boat transition area will also be in the grassy area of Terwilligar Park closer to the river. Both of these areas will be open at 6:30am. Bikes will be racked on a first arrived, first racked process after you have gone through the registration process. A maximum of 6 bikes (3 per side) will be allowed per rack. This will give everyone plenty of space. As the weather may be variable, you will be able to bring a reasonable sized gear box to store a change of clothes and shoes if you feel it necessary. This box must not interfere with the ability of any other athlete to go through the transition area smoothly. Once you have laid out your equipment, please move any excess equipment or bins off to the “baggage” area of the transition area. The transition area is for athletes only and will be attended to by a volunteer for security purposes.

A third transition area will be located after the paddle where your boat and water gear will be kept as you transition to the run portion of the event. Remember to grab anything from this area that you think you may need at the finish line. Your gear will remain here until the end of the event where you will be able to come pick it up after the event. You will be required to show a piece of ID or a matching bib number in order to claim your boat and gear.
***Teams will tag off here as the third member will begin the final leg from here. While here, the team may pick up the boat gear. Individuals may also have someone pick up the boat gear from them as they enter this final transition area. If doing so, parking is in the Fort Edmonton parking area.

Race Notes

*** In the case of severe inclement weather where we would not be able to complete the paddle portion, for athlete safety reasons, the triathlon event will become a bike/run/bike duathlon. The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) will be checked 24 hours prior to race start, and again one hour prior to race start to determine whether it is safe to race. An AQHI exceeding 10 will result in the delay or cancellation of the event. http://www.airquality.alberta.ca/***

***The In Pursuit Adventure Triathlon will be racing side by side with the athletes of the Swim Run Edmonton event also in Terwilligar park. Several trails, aid stations, volunteers and medical response team members will be shared. All participants should show respect for everyone out on the course. We are encouraging a small race festival type atmosphere for the two events working together.***
